Specialised Expertise in Small Batch Production

Woochun Foods Company Co., Ltd., began as a modest tofu factory in Seoul, South Korea in 1975. Today, they have evolved into a leading food company and contract packers for the Asian market, specialising in processed soybean products, including fried tofu. The company possesses specialised expertise in small batch production, managing over 60 SKUs in a single factory.

Woochun Foods produces an average of 200,000 pieces of tofu per day, including fried tofu packaged in flexible plastic bags. On the fried tofu production line, Woochun Foods has installed three Vx150i thermal transfer printers, paired with a pillow wrapping machine, to print the manufacturing and expiry dates on the flexible packaging. The company also produces silken tofu products that require a maturation period and are packaged in rigid plastic containers. For these products, Woochun Foods is considering the introduction of additional Domino printers that utilise durable inks, ensuring they last throughout the maturation period and shelf life of the final product.

Productivity Improvement

“Domino’s thermal transfer overprinter Vx150i is reliable, minimising downtime and reducing the cost of parts replacement, which lowers the total cost of ownership (TCO). From the operator’s perspective, productivity has greatly improved due to enhanced convenience. Previously, it was necessary to frequently clean the printhead from dust as a capstan roller was used. The Vx150i has eliminated the capstan roller, significantly reducing the need for cleaning. The cassette on the Vx printer also makes changing ribbons very easy. Additionally, the larger touch screen simplifies the editing of dates,” said Taewon Cho, Director of Manufacturing & Planning at Woochun Foods.

Rapid Support for Fresh Food Packaging Lines

Since tofu is a fresh food produced and delivered daily, printer reliability and prompt service are crucial to prevent product spoilage or waste. Additionally, support was required to swiftly adapt to changes in the production line for different products and regional packaging regulations. Domino Korea addressed Woochun Foods’ needs by preparing spare parts in advance for quick responses and providing bespoke solutions to optimise the printing direction.

The fact that the Vx150i operates without factory air, thereby reducing overall energy consumption, was another key factor in Woochun Foods’ final technology choice.
