What is the Deposit Return Scheme?

Deposit Return Scheme

In an effort to combat plastic pollution and to promote recycling. Ireland has introduced the Deposit Return Scheme to incentivise consumers to return their empty bottles and cans by providing a refundable deposit upon return.

Under this scheme consumers pay a small deposit when purchasing beverages packaged in single-use containers. Once the containers are empty, consumers can return them to designated collection points to reclaim their deposit.

Implications on Labelling Requirements

The introduction of the Deposit Return Scheme in Ireland will drive changes in the Coding, Marking and Labelling of products, as manufacturers adapt to meet regulatory requirements and consumer preferences for sustainable packaging

Labelling Requirements

Manufacturers may need to update their product labels to include information regards the Deposit Return Scheme and a 2D code to be scanned at collection points.

Traceability and Tracking

With an increased emphasis on recycling and return of beverage containers, there is a greater focus on traceability and tracking of products throughout the supply chain. 2D codes will play a vital role in this.

Packaging Design

Manufacturers might reconsider their packaging designs to ensure compatibility with the Deposit Return Scheme. This could involve single materials that are easily recyclable or designing containers that are compatible with the automated reverse vending machines used for returns.

Quality Assurance

As returned containers need to be in a suitable condition for recycling or reuse, manufacturers may need to implement quality assurance measures to ensure that coding and marking on the packaging remain legible and intact after use.

Production Efficiency

Changes in packaging requirements and increased demand for recyclable materials may impact production processes and efficiency. Manufacturers may need to invest in equipment and technologies that support sustainable packaging practices while maintaining productivity.
